Garcinia Cambogia Extract
Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA)
What is garcinia?
Garcinia Cambogia is one of the species of Garcinia, a plant genus of the family Clusiaceae. It is also commonly known with some other names as Malabar tamarind, Gambooge, Kodumpulli (Kerala), Goraka (Sri Lanka), Brindleberry or Brindall berry.
Garcinia is indigenous to parts of Southern Asia, Africa and Australia. The fruit of this tropical evergreen tree is about the size of an orange but it looks like a small pumpkin.
For centuries, this fruit has been used for cooking and herbal healing purposes in Thailand, Southern India and in Southeast Asia.
How garcinia acts?
The rind of this fruit is dried and is used to produce the Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) which is the active ingredient in garcinia cambogia fruit. HCA and citric acid found in oranges and other citrus fruits are chemically very similar and both of them are natural appetite suppressants.
The HCA inhibits an enzyme called citrate lyase (extramitochondrial enzyme adenosine triphosphate-citrate (pro-3S)-lyase). This enzyme is needed for the synthesis of fatty acids in the liver. During the normal metabolism of a meal, carbohydrates that are not stored as glycogen or used immediately for energy are converted into fats in the liver.
First, carbohydrates break down into citrate compounds and then they are converted by citrate lyase into another compound, the acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA), the metabolic building block of fat synthesis. By inhibiting the citrate lyase, we are blocking the conversion of citrate into acetyl-CoA and this is how HCA deters lipogenesis and fat synthesis. And thus we are helping also to prevent the accumulation of potentially dangerous fats in the body.
Weight loss benefits of garcinia cambogia and other features
As a result the body destroys those excess carbohydrates that can not be converted into fat, by increasing carbohydrate oxidation (burning them) and burning also the existing fat stores while increasing energy levels. Already enough glycogen has been created and stored in the liver and other tissues and a message is sent to the brain indicating that sufficient food has been taken.
This action is called a satiety reflex and suppresses appetite reducing the desire for more food while we have less cravings for sweets. Of course, garcinia contributes significantly on burning carbohydrates only if we eat a lot of foods containing carbohydrates such as bread, spaghetti, pasta, brown rice, potatoes etc. Other features of this natural herb that can help us all regardless if we consume large amounts of carbohydrates or not, is the ability to reduce blood lipid levels and lower blood cholesterol.
Garcinia also contains significant amounts of vitamin C and it is believed that gives us the feeling of more filling and satisfying taste of the foods. Historically the rind of garcinia has been used in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery, gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, through the action of one of its constituents, the garcinol. Garcinol is known to lower acidity in the stomach and protects the gastric mucosa.
Garcinia cambogia side effects and dosage
Appropriate dosage does not have any side effects in healthy adults and small quantities of garcinia do not damage liver or cause liver failure.
Anyway according to experts, children, pregnant and lactating women, those who have health problems and are in medication are not allowed to take it. The full benefits can be realized when garcinia build up in our system.
For maximum effect and protection, we should take it over a period of five months, stop for one or two months and then start over again.
The daily dosage is one (in some cases two) capsule of garcinia cambogia fruit rind extract 500 mg+ (yielding 250 mg of [-] Hydroxycitric Acid per capsule), 20 - 30 minutes before every breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I know that this is not so convenience for today's life-style but we have to give to our body the time to absorb HCA so when we will eat HCA will be ready to act.
Weight loss products containing garcinia
There is a wide variety of weight loss products containing garcinia cambogia extract and are usually sold in capsules, standardized to include 50% HCA. But only products with 50% or greater hydroxycitric acid (HCA) are generally recommended.
Adopting this natural nutritional supplement for weight loss in our weight loss program in conjunction with Aloe Vera for weight loss is a nice chance to reduce our fat mass, to lower our body weight and increase energy levels in a natural way.
